Weekend review

Celtic 3 Rangers 0 (Sunday)
Celtic cruised to a comfortable win in the Final Old Firm game of the season against a disappointing Rangers side.  Charlie Mulgrew opened the scoring with a bullet header from Kris Commons’ corner.  Celtic then went two in front when Commons finished coolly from  Gary Hooper’s pass.  Allan McGregor saved well from Joe Ledley before Hooper made it three with a drive from Georgios Samaras’ pass.

Dundee United 2 Hearts 2
United’s Champions League dream took a blow when they were held at home by Hearts.  United went in front when Willo Flood gathered Ryan McGowan’s defensive header and drilled a low drive into the net.  Rudi Skacel got his side back level within three minutes when his neat header after Robbie Neilson’s clearance crept in at the far post.  Hearts lost striker Craig Beattie with a recurrence of his heel injury during the first-half.  Gary Mackay-Steven fired United back in front from Flood’s corner but Hearts had been a threat and substitute Arvydas Novikovas deservedly equalised after he turned inside Scott Robertson and scored.

Dunfermline Athletic 3 Aberdeen 0
Dunfermline’s first home win this season in the Clydesdale Bank Premier League gave them a glimpse of survival.  They ended the weekend within three points of second-bottom Hibs after the Easter Road side’s Sunday defeat at Paisley.  All the Pars’ goals came in the second-half – they took the lead when Joe Cardle got the break of the ball on the edge of the box and fired into the corner of the net.  They went further ahead when Cardle's free-kick was glanced past Jamie Langfield by Andy Kirk, and Kirk seized on Fraser Fyvie’s pass-back to add the third.

Kilmarnock 4 Inverness Caledonian Thistle 3
Killie secured the win thanks to late goals in a Rugby Park thriller.  James Fowler put the home side ahead after Ryan Esson had saved from Danny Racchi, but Billy McKay levelled when Greg Tansey’s drive came back off the Killie bar.  McKay then headed Caley Thistle in front from Jonny Hayes’ cross, but Hayes was sent off for a foul on Ben Gordon and Michael Nelson made it 2-2 with a back-post header from Racchi's cross.  Dean Shiels put Killie ahead after 80 minutes then cracked in his second on 85 mins from a William Gros lay-off, but Inverness C.T. made it 4-3 when Steve Williams touched the ball past Cammy Bell in stoppage time.

Motherwell 5 St Johnstone 1
Motherwell took a giant stride towards a Champions League spot with a comprehensive win over Saints.  They went ahead when Chris Humphrey was brought down by Stuart Anderson and Michael Higdon drilled in the penalty.  Humphrey was again the provider when his cross was turned in by Nicky Law for the second.  Motherwell added a third early in the second-half when Jamie Murphy turned in Tom Hateley’s cross, but Saints pulled one back when Shaun Hutchinson pulled down Marcus Haber and Liam Craig scored from the spot.  Substitute Henrik Ojamaa made it 4-1 when he fired in from Humphrey’s cut-back and the Estonian added the final goal with a solo effort.  Stuart McCall’s side are now five points ahead of fourth-placed Dundee United.

St Mirren 1 Hibernian 0 (Sunday)

Kenny McLean’s second-half goal plunged Hibs deep into the relegation mire.  Pat Fenlon’s side are now only three points ahead of Dunfermline at the foot of the Clydesdale Bank Premier League.  Eoin Doyle missed two chances for Hibs before and after the break before McLean converted Jeroen Tesselaar’s cross.  St Mirren were reduced to ten men when Marc McAusland was shown a second yellow card for pulling back Leigh Griffiths.  With the home side content to hold on, Lewis Stevenson was also sent off for a second bookable offence.
