Weekend review

St Mirren 5 Ross County 4
Steven Thompson’s last-minute goal decided an amazing topsy-turvy game.  The visitors took the lead through Iain Vigurs’ curling drive before Thompson equalised from Jim Goodwin’s corner, but County regained the lead through Grant Munro’s scrambled finish.  A Lewis Guy penalty early in the second half, Sam Parkin's close-range finish from David van Zanten’s cross and substitute Kenny McLean's long-range strike put St Mirren 4-2 in front.  But two goals in two minutes from Rocco Quinn seemed to have earned County a draw until Thompson's overhead kick from Graham Carey’s cross won it for the home side.

Aberdeen 2 Hibernian 1
Aberdeen ended their seven-game wait for a home win – and ruined Hibs’ hopes of going top of the Clydesdale Bank Premier League.  The home side took the lead when Ben Williams parried out Scott Vernon’s drive to Niall McGinn, who fired home.  Hibs levelled when Eoin Doyle beat the offside trap to fire past Jamie Langfied.  However Aberdeen won it when substitute Josh Magennis’ cross was poked in by Gavin Rae.

Dundee 1 St Johnstone 3
Dundee have drifted four points adrift at the bottom of the table after a home defeat to Saints.  Gregory Tade put his side ahead from Liam Craig’s cross but Dundee levelled through Ryan Conroy’s penalty after Frazer Wright fouled Martin Boyle.  Saints regained the lead when Craig fired in after Tade glanced on Chris Millar’s cross.  St Johnstone then made it 3-1 and sealed the points when Steven MacLean reacted quickest to turn in Wright’s header on.

Hearts 1 Kilmarnock 3
Kilmarnock moved up to third in the table as they made it six games unbeaten against Hearts.  Arvydas Novikovas and Callum Paterson both missed chances for the home side before Cillian Sheridan headed the visitors ahead from James Dayton’s cross.  The former Celtic frontman doubled Killie’s lead when he advanced and beat Jamie MacDonald with the home side claiming offside.  Sheridan completed his hat-trick with a simple finish on the hour and although Marius Zaliukas pulled one back from Danny Grainger’s corner, Hearts were well beaten.

Inverness Caledonian Thistle 4 Dundee United 0

United made it seven goals conceded in two Clydesdale Bank Premier League games after a convincing win for Inverness C.T.  It was Caley Thistle’s first league win of the season and they never looked back after Richie Foran converted Philip Roberts’ pass.  Roberts repeated the trick when he provided the cross for Foran to make it 2-0.  Andrew Shinnie added the third from Foran’s pass and Roberts – on his home debut – fired the fourth to wrap up the win.

Motherwell 0 Celtic 2
Celtic sailed to the top of the Clydesdale Bank Premier League table with a well-earned win at Fir Park.  Gary Hooper continued the form that saw him score four against Raith Rovers in midweek when he took Kris Commons’ pass to open the scoring.  The day got worse for Motherwell three minutes later when home defender Adam Cummins turned Scott Brown’s cross past goalkeeper Darren Randolph.  Cummins' day got even worse when he pulled Commons down and was shown a straight red card by referee Iain Brines, but Randolph saved Brown’s penalty – the second game in succession the Celtic skipper has missed a spot-kick.
